Like many dog owners, I love to give my dogs chew treats. The dogs love them and they keep them busy, plus help clean their teeth. However, with so many unhealthy and even dangerous dog chew options out there, it is so important to find chews from sources and companies you can trust. Typically, I like to avoid anything that is not easily digestible or treated with potentially dangerous chemicals. I also want to give them something that is on the healthier side and not filled with bad carbs and artificial ingredients.
Best Bully Sticks sells a variety of dog chews and treats- not just bully sticks! They sent me some USA made odor free bully sticks and antlers to try with Echo and Gracie. The dogs definitely approved of both chews. Gracie, who is usually pretty picky about treats and chews, even ate her bully stick and chewed on the antler.
Regular bully sticks can have a pretty strong odor to them, but these odor free bully sticks did not stink. I also really like that they are made in the USA from hormone free cattle. I refuse to give my dogs food or treats sourced from certain countries, but much prefer USA or Canadian sourced rather than shipped from overseas. So what are bully sticks? Bully sticks are made from beef pizzle, or a bull penis, that has been cooked in an oven to kill any harmful bacteria and to drain the moisture. They are a safe alternative to indigestible and dangerous rawhides.
Elk antlers are one of my favorite options for long lasting dog chews. They last a long time, are very safe, and elks naturally shed their antlers every year so they are a very humane option. I gave Gracie a split antler since she is not a tough chewer. The inside of the antler is softer and so dogs like Gracie can still enjoy them. Echo got a whole antler, meaning the soft inside is not cut open. He has to chew at his antler more to get to the inside part. Antlers are also a great mess free option for people who are worried about carpets or staining on their dog’s fur. Antlers are a safe alternative to cooked bones, which can easily splinter and pierce the inside of your dog’s intestines when swallowed.
