How to start a dog meetup in your area

Have you ever wished you had someone to meet with at the dog park? Or have you ever wished there was someone to go hiking with you and your dog?

Meetups are great way to meet people in your area who are dog owners and like to do activities with their dogs! Meetups are also great for dog socialization. Plus, after you get to know the owner and their dog, you will know how your dogs will act around each other and do not have the worry of meeting a strange dog. Not only do you get to know people in your area, but your dog also gets to play and socialize with other dogs.01266395915a8e2ecb7c5ae15babed321f44a9e306

There are several ways that you can start a meetup, however I believe the best way is through social media. Meetup.com is a great way to get the word out there about your new dog group, but it does cost money. It is $9.99 a month, but you can ask members to help with the costs. I currently have one meetup through Meetup.com for dog owners in my area, but am also an assistant organizer for another group in Atlanta. I have found that Meetup.com is worth the costs and members tend to jump on to a new group pretty quick! I already have 30 members in my group that I started 2 weeks ago!

Another option is creating a Facebook group. Facebook groups are a little more difficult to get people to join. However, you can share the group with your friends and on local community pages to try to get the word out about your new group. Facebook is also a great option if you want to do more than just events or meetings. 015bdd0d345fd8339aed7f2a306a61f2d2f8916f03.jpg

After you have created your new meetup group, whether its through Meetup.com, Facebook. or another option, you will need to advertise it. You can share the group link on Facebook, Twitter, or send out an email. You can also create a flier to hang up at local shelters, pet stores, and other businesses. Creating business cards is also a great option. If you have a business card, you can quickly hand one to a dog owner that you pass at the park or on a walk.

I have found going to meetups are much better than just going to the dog park alone. Gracie seems to enjoy seeing the same dogs and tends to play more when she is more familiar with them.

I hope that you have fun meeting new dogs and owners in your area and good luck starting your new dog meetup!

Katie and Gracie
